Weekends on the lake truly are the most relaxing way to unwind and recharge. Since I moved to Birmingham, I was always reminded of this beautiful place called Lake Martin, just eighty miles from Birmingham. This summer, I finally visited and completely fell in love. Evidently, Lake Martin proves to be a perfect getaway, even during the off season. This weekend, I said goodbye to responsibility and technology, and hello to sunny skies, warm temperatures, nature sounds and scrumptious food! It was the best decision I’ve made in awhile.
Russell Crossroads, a tiny establishment located off Russell Farms Road, has a grocery market, community garden, adventure center, horse stable, and two restaurants, one of which is Miss Catherine’s! Catherine’s Market was created to reminisce on the original Catherine’s Grocery, that had a “little bit of a lot”. A small town super market has reinvented itself in the rolling green hills of Lake Martin. Catherine’s is known to “sell more out the back door than the front”, making it the perfect place to grab a few groceries and run into a neighbor!
Located in the back of the grocery, there is a breakfast counter that serves delicious classics for shocking prices. Most of the breakfast entrees are between four and six dollars! The breakfast sandwich is composed of toasted bread, fluffy fresh eggs, melted cheese and a perfectly salted meat of your choice. The French Toast is to die for. It is coated in batter and pan-fried to perfection. Topped with powdered sugar and strawberries, this forever breakfast classic is four dollars of pure heaven! I would highly recommend stopping in for breakfast at Miss Catherine’s, then making a dinner reservation across the property at Spring House, a southern fine dining experience with, in my opinion, some of the best cuisine in the state of Alabama. I am hoping to return soon to highlight some of the best dishes Spring House has to offer!
This weekend was unbeatable. If you have yet experienced this quaint little community of Russell Crossroads, you better hurry on over! The Southern Hospitality is awaiting!
