Last Friday was date night. My sweet boyfriend Philip decided it was a perfect night for tacos, guacamole and a cocktail… What a keeper, right?! He knows the way to my heart.
Babalu, previously operating in Jackson, Mississippi and Memphis, Tennessee, came to Birmingham, Alabama in October of 2014. Boy am I thankful it did!
We started the evening with cocktails. Duh. Philip ordered the Baba-rita — a shaken margarita on the rocks with Patron Silver, Agave nectar, Patron Citronge, fresh sour mix and POM juice. It was refreshing, crisp and worth the embarrassment of ordering a pink beverage 😉 Good for you, Philip. I selected the Red Sangria — it was a drier red wine, with a squeeze of both orange and lime, what a treat!
Next, we tasted the Tableside Guacamole — Hass avocado, sun-dried tomato, red & green onion, Kosher salt, cilantro, lime juice and house chips. It was literally made on our table! It was the freshest guacamole I have ever enjoyed. BY FAR, the best part of the evening.
We then moved on to tacos…
-Carne La Vaca: Aspen Ridge Natural Beef tenderloin, pico de gallo, salsa roja and cotija cheese
-Vegetal: Local summer squash, zucchini, crimini mushroom, grilled red onion ring, red chimichurri, arugula and cotija cheese
-Pollo: House smoked Joyce Farms chicken, mole sauce, smoked corn pico de gallo, cotija cheese and goat cheese crema
Overall, the tacos were flavorful and great. They came out slightly chilled, unfortunately. But that will not keep me from returning in the future! Y’all seriously go try Babalu Tacos + Tapas and let me know what you think!
